I’m not sure why it happens so frequently, but somehow food storage containers are always getting disorganized! Maybe you give some to a neighbor with a treat inside, and they return a mismatched container of their own. Perhaps you are a collector of take-home containers, and you are constantly shoving new containers to the back of the shelf. Whenever you get more, or the washing is done, they always end up being thrown haphazardly into their place, and who knows how many full sets you really have in there! When they aren’t optimally stored, they take up way more space in the kitchen than they need. Decluttering and organizing your food storage containers will give you space back in your kitchen that you didn’t even realize you had.
Match your lids to your bottoms and your bottoms to your lids
The first step in getting your food storage containers organized, like any other part of your home, is to pull everything out. I mean everything. Go all the way to the very back of your cabinets and take out every piece that you have. Once you have everything laid out on your counter or table, start matching up your bottoms to your tops and your tops and your bottoms! Make sure that every piece has its match. If you have glass containers that are missing a lid, you can order a new bottom instead of having to throw out the tops. If you have lids for glass containers but no bottom, you can order new ones as well! Any mismatched plastic pieces can be recycled.
Get them organized
In a drawer
My personal favorite way to store food storage containers is in a drawer. By storing them in a drawer, you can nest the bottoms inside of each other and keep the lids organized in a bin. You can use another container bottom to store the lids, or you can get a dedicated organizer for them. If you have the luxury of being able to store them in a drawer, you can stack your containers nice and high, and then pull out the drawer to see every single size that you have. This is a great way to easily access all of your containers.
On a shelf
If you don’t have a drawer to put them in, storing them on a shelf is another great option. You can store the containers with their lids attached so you don’t have to spend unnecessary time searching for the matching pieces. Instead of precariously stacking different sizes on top of each other, you can use risers to maximize your storage space.
Make the switch to glass
Recently, I made the switch from plastic containers to glass and it was life-changing!!! They are studier and will last you much longer than the plastic ones because they won’t get scratched and stained. You can microwave them safely and they are easier to clean. Another great bonus is that you can easily replace the lids if you ever lose any of them.
Do what works best for you
If you are like most people, you have very strong opinions on which way is the best to store your containers. I personally love my Tupperware drawer, but some people swear by their matching and stacking shelves. No matter the method you prefer, find what works best for you and your home. Just make sure you only have what you use, and that you can find the lid when you need it!
